Four years ago, we had both Borough and County Council elections at the same time, after the Borough elections had been delayed by a year, due to the pandemic. I was elected for a three year term on the Borough Council for the Weddington ward but failed, by just 10 votes, to be re-elected as County Councillor in the larger County Council division, which includes St Nicolas Park. Last year, my wife Michele, and Mike Wright were elected as Borough councillors for Weddington ward. I have kept myself very busy helping and fighting for our community. As you will see in this newsletter, there has been a lot going on and we really need a stronger voice standing up for our area at Shire Hall. In the last four years, the County Council has sold off land for development, failed to provide the infrastructure we need, and now they will be reducing the fire service based in Nuneaton to just one fire engine. On top of that, plans for a new Weddington Health centre have been scrapped, upgrades to the sewage network have been paused and rail upgrades have stalled. Even simple things, like providing bus stops, cycle lanes and EV charging points have focussed on the better-off parts of Warwickshire. Having our Borough represented by 12 Conservatives and a single Labour County councillor has not been useful. We need a strong local Green voice in the room. The County Council elections will take place on 1st of May. Remember to take your photo ID or apply for a postal vote from the Borough council. |
